The transcription and ordering of the sequence itself went on until 1374, the year of the poet's death. ![]() Petrarch's meticulous dating of his manuscripts has allowed scholars to deduce that the poems were written over a period of forty years, with the earliest dating from shortly after 1327, and the latest around 1368. Though disputed, the inscription in his copy of Virgil records this information. Its central theme is the poet's love for Laura, a woman Petrarch allegedly met on April 6, 1327, in the Church of Sainte Claire in Avignon. Of its 366 poems, the vast majority are in sonnet form (317), though the sequence contains a number of canzoni (29), sestine (9), madrigals (4), and ballate (7). ![]() Though the majority of Petrarch's output was in Latin, the Canzoniere was written in the vernacular, a language of trade, despite Petrarch's view that Italian was less adequate for expression. I stepped off the elevator on the third floor and ignored the stares from the female freshmen hanging around in the hallways and common area. ![]() Somehow, I got roped into helping this faceless friend move into her dorm. Naomi wasn’t sure what direction she wanted to go in her life yet, so she moved with me to New York City after graduation. When I came home, I spent all my time with my family or catching up with the few friends I’d kept in touch with after high school. I’d never met Ember because she’d moved to my hometown during Naomi’s senior year, and I was busy at college. Luckily, Naomi’s best friend was moving into one with an elevator near the entrance. (In one weird scene here, Goldman, Cherry and the Slits’ Ari Up sing back-up for reggae star Prince Far I.) She chases the spirit of feminist punk everywhere - even the pop charts. She ventures all over the globe, chronicling bands from Colombia to Czechoslakia to Kashimir. She goes thrift-shopping with Patti Smith and sits on the Jamaican beach with Grace Jones. Goldman gives every chapter a Spotify playlist so you can listen along as you read - which is practically impossible not to do, since her excitement is so contagious. ![]() Private books by kate brian6/24/2023 ![]() ![]() Both series are set at the exclusive private boarding school Easton Academy. ![]() This was followed by the sequel, Beautiful Disaster, in 2009.
